N'ayant pu être présent au vernissage, l'artiste fu néanmoins reçut et fêté par les nombreux amis et amateurs d'art qu'il a, à Malte...

"I never refer to myself as an artist. After all who can explain what and who an artist really is? It could be just an empty, meaningless word if the person professing to be an artist is not first and foremost humane".

This statement was made to me by the internationally and renowned artist Giacomo de Pass when I met him recently during a dinner party at Dame Françoise Tempra 's charming home. In fact I shall always feel indebted to her for this unique experience.

"Look at my works", he explainned further, my paintings never illustrate landscapes, trees and flowers. Nature's voice is so very strong! It does not need me to comment about it. So I always focus an peaple. I look at the work of other artists- painters, sculptors, musicians and all the rest, and I ask mycelf "now why did Picasso express himself in that manner, or why did Mozart think it fit to compose this oeuvre? It is very important for me to discover how I would have expressed myself had I been in their stead. It is this voyage, this trip into the psyche of other peaple that helps me anderstand myself better. My work deals exclusively with peaple. In fact I can honestly say that my works symbolise man's journey and travails, and that one work actually leads me into another. They are all the direct result of actions and situations. As we say, no man is an island. We all need each other. Anyone can be an artist, anyone can drew or paint. But we must keep in touch, we must understand our fellow men. Otherwise we will end up being good technicians, but not "true artist".

Giacomo de Pass follows his philosophy faithfully. His works achive great success wherever they are exhibited. We are now fortunate enough to be able to visit an exhibition of his works consisting of paintings, sculptures in bronze, gouaches, lithographs and prints. Concurently another exhibition of Giacomo's works in being held in Berne, Switzerland. He has held many exhibitions in various countries, including France, Italy, Belgium and the United States of America.

It was, for me, a unique opportunity to meet this great but unassuming artist and I hope to be able to meet him again in the near future.
